Erskine Hypnotherapy
 by Achieve It! Therapies

Here, with the answers, are the most commonly asked questions about hypnotherapy and my practice.  If you can't find an answer just contact me and I'm sure I'll be able to help you.   For more information you can access my brochures as PDF files from the bottom of this page or you will find more information on the website of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis..

1. How does hypnotherapy work?

- There are several theories about this.  Hypnosis is a state of conscious relaxation and the therapist uses your own goals in therapy - allowing you to easily and naturally make the changes that you wish.

2. What is hypnosis?

- Hypnosis is a state of physical relaxation but it's not sleep, in this state you are more open to suggestions that fit with your own goals, you are in control at all times.

3. How can I be sure that I will not be trapped in a hypnotic trance?

- Hypnosis is perfectly natural state - which we go in and out of regularly each day, like daydreaming.  You are no more able to be trapped in a trance than trapped in a daydream.

4. Can you make me do things I don't want?

- No!  Hypnotherapy can be a very empowering experience, but your mind and will remain your own - and you cannot be hypnotised to do things you don't really want.  However, if you need some motivation and guidance to help make changes that you want to make in your life - that's when hypnotherapy comes into its own.

5. I have seen a stage hypnotist in a show - what is the difference?

- The stage hypnotist is using the suggestibility of some members of the audience for entertainment.  A hypnotherapist uses a therapeutic approach together with relaxed state to help you achieve your own goals.

6. What type of training do you have?

-As well as being a qualified registered nurse since 1984, I have completed 4 years of training with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis (LCCH) whose courses are accredited by the Royal College of Nursing and the University of West London. I currently hold their Certificate and Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis as well as Practitioner Diplomas in Clinical Hypnosis and Cognitive Behavioural Hypnosis. I am a full member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis and adhere to their Code of Conduct, which you can access here.   I also undertake regular clinical supervision, additional courses and masterclasses to ensure my knowledge and practice stays up to date

7. How effective is hypnotherapy?

- Recent research has indicated that hypnotherapy is an effective treatment for chronic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), stopping smoking and weight loss.  It has also long been used effectively for childbirth, phobias, anxiety and stress management, as well as many other conditions.  Hypnotherapy techniques are often used by sports coaches for improved performance.  However, just as there is no guarantee that a painkiller will cure a headache - hypnotherapy does not come with a guarantee and it may not be suitable for everyone.

8. How long are appointments, how many will I need and what do you charge?

- Appointments are generally 60-75 minutes.  Assessments and Initial consultations are free and carried out on a no-obligation basis.  These last 20-30 minutes in addition to any treatment appointment.  Stop Smoking and Gastric Band appointments may be longer. By nature hypnotherapy is a "brief" therapy, which means that you are likely to benefit more rapidly than with some other talking therapies.   How many appointments you will need is an individual thing, depends on the nature and severity of the issue and can be discussed at the initial consultation.

Charges :

Stopping Smoking :£125 for 1 session which lasts 1.5 to 2 hours.  The majority of clients will stop with 1 session.  If this has not been effective and you let me know within 1 week after your 1st appointment I offer a second FREE appointment.

Gastric Band : £325 For a programme of 4 sessions.

Other Hypnotherapy : £60 per appointment, or £150 per block of 3 appointments (block bookings must be paid for at the first appointment.  Appointments usually last between 60 and 75 minutes.

These questions are answered more fully on the Appointments page.

9.   What if I don't get a call back if I leave a message or the number rings out?

- Sometimes I may not be able to hear your message clearly enough to catch the number, and therefore can't call you back, if you leave a message please say your number slowly and clearly (or even repeat it). At times there may be no room on my answering machine - in which case the phone may ring out in this case please call back later.

10. What if my question is not here?

 - More information might be available in one of our brochures which you can download below or please feel free to contact me with any other questions.
